This week I have been teaching mask-making and performance skills to second year students of theatre design at Nottingham tTent University. A lot of them, 26, but very up for it. We worked hard and has fun. Nice improvised performances. Again, it seems non-actors will respond well to mask performance practice. Works in progression. Its all about processes.
We worked with the idea of ‘The Human Animal’ starting with free drawing, taking the idea’s into clay and casting in paper-mache.

The First Mask
This mask “Crane Man” was the first I ever made, under the tutelage of Mike Chase of the Mask Studio.
Must have been about 1995. I later worked with Mike and he continues to inspire.
Photographed by Joe Riley this summer. Check out his website, he is a very accomplished and creative photographer.
